Frequently Asked Questions from Customers

Windows 10 configuration takes place in two stages:

  1. the initial out-of-box experience (OOBE) after installation,
  2. the ongoing configuration via Settings, Control Panel and advanced tools.

1. Initial configuration (OOBE): don't just click ‘Next’

When you turn on a new Windows 10 PC or after a clean installation, you must complete the Out-of-Box Experience (OOBE) procedure. It's worth taking your time here:

  • Region and keyboard: choose the correct language, region, and keyboard layout. This affects the time, currency, and shortcuts.
  • Network: if possible, connect to Wi-Fi or Ethernet. Being online makes activation and updates smoother.
  • Account:
    1. Sign in with a Microsoft account if you want to use OneDrive, apps from the Store, synchronisation, etc.
    2. On Windows 10 Pro, you can still create a local account if you prefer not to connect to the cloud.
  • PIN access: set up a PIN for faster and more secure access than a simple password.
  • Privacy options: take 1-2 minutes to read through these options. You can disable or change:
    1. Location
    2. Diagnostic data
    3. Personalised advertising
    4. ‘Find my device’
  • Use case (‘How will you use this device?’): Microsoft uses this option to send suggestions (games, school, creativity). Optional, not essential.
  • Optional services:you can safely ignore items such as:
    1. OneDrive backup ‘right away’
    2. Xbox Game Pass trials
    3. Cortana voice assistant

2. Main configuration: the Settings app

Most everyday configurations are now located in Settings.

Open the app with Win + I or Start → ⚙ Settings.

Key sections to review:

  • System
  1. Screen resolution, scaling, HDR
  2. Notifications and Focus Assist
  3. Power and sleep (important for laptops)

Devices

  1. Bluetooth devices, printers, scanners
  2. Mouse, touchpad, and typing options

Personalisation

  1. Background, colours, themes
  2. Lock screen and taskbar behaviour

Apps

  1. Uninstalling bloatware
  2. Setting default apps (browser, email, PDF viewer, etc.)
  3. Managing optional features

Accounts

  1. Personal information (local account vs Microsoft account)
  2. Sign-in options (PIN, fingerprint, Windows Hello)
  3. Family and other users

Network and Internet

  1. Wi-Fi and Ethernet configuration
  2. Proxy/VPN settings

Update and security

  1. Windows Update (run immediately after installation)
  2. Backup and restore options
  3. Windows Security/Defender settings

3. Advanced legacy tools: Control Panel and similar

Some advanced features are not yet available in the modern Settings app.

Control Panel

Search for “Control Panel” from Start.

Useful areas:

  • Network and Sharing Centre
  1. View active network
  2. Change adapter settings
  3. Set IP/DNS manually, if necessary
  • System → Advanced system settings
  1. Performance options (visual effects vs speed)
  2. Startup and recovery
  3. Environment variables (for developers)

System Configuration (msconfig)

Great for troubleshooting startup issues and stubborn startup services.

  1. Press Win + R, type msconfig, press Enter.
  2. Usage:
  • General: Normal start-up / Diagnostic / Selective
  • Startup: Safe mode, startup options
  • Services: Enable/disable services (select ‘Hide all Microsoft services’ before disabling others)
  • Startup: link to the Startup tab in Task Manager

Please note: this is a diagnostic tool, not an app for everyday ‘tuning’.

4. Quick checklist for a new Windows 10 PC

If you have just unpacked or reinstalled Windows 10, perform at least the following steps:

  • Run Windows Update until there are no pending updates.
  • Install GPU, chipset, and peripheral drivers (Windows handles most of this, but OEM drivers can help).
  • Remove trialware/bloatware you don't need.
  • Set your default browser and PDF/app associations.
  • Set up your backup (File History, OneDrive, or an external drive).
  • On Windows 10 Pro, consider enabling BitLocker for drive encryption.

The official minimum requirements for Windows 10 are quite low, but in practice, you need more resources to use the system smoothly.

Minimum requirements for Windows 10

  • 32-bit Windows 10: minimum 1 GB of RAM
  • 64-bit Windows 10: minimum 2 GB of RAM

With these values, the system will install and start up, but the experience may be slow, especially with multiple programmes open.

Recommended RAM based on usage

  • Basic use (browsing, email, light Office use): at least 4 GB of RAM recommended
  • Daily use with multiple apps open / multitasking: 8 GB of RAM is better as a reference
  • Intensive use (gaming, graphics, video editing, virtual machines): ideally 16 GB of RAM or more, depending on the programmes used

Why do you need more than the minimum amount of RAM?

  • The official requirements only indicate the threshold for installing and starting Windows 10.
  • Modern apps, browsers with many tabs, and heavy software increase memory consumption.
  • A system with little RAM tends to use the disk (paging file) more, with a significant drop in performance.
  • On 32-bit systems, you cannot really use more than ~4 GB of RAM: to use 8 GB or more, you need 64-bit Windows 10.

If you are upgrading or reinstalling Windows 10 with a new licence:

  • First, check how much RAM is installed on your PC and whether your processor supports 64-bit.
  • Consider upgrading your RAM if you are still below 4–8 GB.

The Licence represents the legal right to use the software. It is a contract (EULA - End User Licence Agreement) between you (or your company) and Microsoft. By purchasing from Mr Key Shop, you receive a lifetime, legal and billable licence.

The Product Key is the technical tool for proving that you own the licence. It is a unique code consisting of 25 characters (divided into groups of 5, e.g. XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX).

It is used to ‘unlock’ the installation of Windows during the setup phase or in the settings.

Often used as a synonym for Product Key, the Activation Key more properly refers to successful activation on Microsoft servers.

Once the Product Key has been entered, Windows communicates with the activation servers to verify that the code is original and does not exceed the limit of permitted installations.

The most obvious difference concerns the user interface. In Windows 11, the Start menu and taskbar are centred, with rounded window corners for a more modern look. Windows 10, on the other hand, retains the classic layout with the Start Menu aligned to the left and the ‘Live Tiles’ feature, preferred by many for access.

Not always. Windows 11 has much stricter hardware requirements, including the need for a TPM 2.0 chip, Secure Boot, and recent-generation processors. Windows 10 is much more flexible and remains the best choice for those who have older hardware but still want fast and secure performance.

Yes, Windows 10 includes robust protections such as Microsoft Defender and BitLocker. Although standard support has ended, many businesses and professionals continue to use it with complete confidence thanks to Extended Security Updates (ESU) programmes. At Mr Key Shop, we always recommend combining a Windows 10 licence with McAfee Antivirus for proactive protection against modern threats.

Windows 11 integrates Xbox technologies such as Auto HDR and DirectStorage. If your hardware does not support these specifications, Windows 10 remains the operating system of choice for many gamers due to its stability and universal compatibility with older drivers.

In Windows 11, some classic apps such as Paint have been redesigned with layers and AI background removal, while Cortana has been replaced by Copilot. If you prefer a more basic system that is less focused on invasive AI, Windows 10 offers a more traditional experience focused on pure performance.

By purchasing Windows 10 from MrKeyShop, you receive an official activation code issued directly by Microsoft. The license is legal, permanent, and guaranteed: no cracks, no broken serial numbers, no malware risk. Post-sales support included.
