How to activate and install Autodesk Advance Steel

The Advance Steel license purchased on Mr Key Shop is linked to the Autodesk account associated with the purchase email. The software is downloaded directly from the Autodesk portal.

Step 1. License receipt and activation 

The license is automatically assigned to the Autodesk account linked to the email entered at the time of purchase. If you do not yet have an Autodesk account, create a free one on autodesk.com using the same email used for the order. The license will be available with fast activation within a few minutes (up to 18 hours during peak times on weekdays, up to 48 hours on weekends).

Step 2. Software download 

Sign in to autodesk.com with your account. Go to Products and Services or Product Management: Advance Steel will be listed among your active products. Select Download and start the download. The current version and the three most recent previous versions are available. For older versions, contact Autodesk support.

Step 3. Installation 

Run the downloaded installation file. The process will install Advance Steel in a short time. At first launch, Advance Steel opens with its dedicated interface. Sign in with the credentials of the Autodesk account on which the license was activated.

Step 4. Migration of custom settings 

If you are upgrading from a previous version, the Migrate Custom Settings Tool allows you to import custom settings, drawing styles, profile databases and detailing configurations from the previous version into the new one.

• What is Autodesk Advance Steel? 

Autodesk Advance Steel is Autodesk’s BIM software for detailed design and fabrication of steel structures. Built on the AutoCAD platform, it allows you to model parametric 3D steel structures and automatically generate shop drawings, bills of materials and CNC files for fabrication. It is used by structural engineers, detailers and steel fabrication workshops for industrial, commercial and infrastructure projects.

• Is the Educational version complete with all features? 

Yes. The Educational version includes all Advance Steel features, identical to the Commercial version. It does not include watermarks, functional limitations or any reference to the Educational version in shop drawings, bills of materials or fabrication files. The only difference is the permitted use: personal and educational, not for paid professional work.

• What are the main features?

1. Parametric Connection Library: Includes hundreds of intelligent connections (bolted or welded) that automatically adapt when profile sizes change.
2. Stairs and Railings: Dedicated tools to quickly model secondary structures.
3. Automatic Documentation: Automatic generation of plans, elevations, sections and single-part drawings with dimensions and annotations.
4. Bill of Materials (BOM): Creation of accurate material lists for procurement and logistics.
5. BIM Integration: Bidirectional data exchange with Revit, Robot Structural Analysis and Navisworks.

• Advance Steel vs Revit: which one should you choose?

This is the most common question. Here is the key difference:

• Can I customize drawings?

Yes, but it is one of the most complex parts of the software. Through the Drawing Style Manager, you can fully customize how the software dimensions and annotates drawings to match your company standards or local market requirements.

• Does it support European standards?

Yes, Advance Steel includes European profile catalogs (IPE, HEA, UPN, etc.) and allows configuration of connection design checks according to Eurocode 3.

• Does Advance Steel run on Mac? 

No. Autodesk Advance Steel is available exclusively for Windows 10 and 11 64-bit. There is no macOS version. ARM processors are not supported.

• What is Modeling Assist and from which version is it available? 

Modeling Assist is the AI system introduced in Advance Steel 2025 that assists users during structural modeling by automatically suggesting connections, components and repetitive elements based on the project context. It recognizes the most suitable connection types for beams, joints, plates and bolts, reducing manual setup time. It is available from version 2025 onwards.

• How does integration with Revit work? 

Advance Steel synchronizes with Revit through the Advance Steel Extension for Revit. The synchronization is bidirectional: model changes propagate between the two software environments without data loss. In Advance Steel 2026, the ability to transfer individual element marks and assemblies from Advance Steel to Revit was added, along with improvements in exporting frames, columns and curved beams.

• Can Advance Steel read point clouds from laser scanners? 

Yes. Advance Steel supports importing laser scan data in point cloud format, allowing you to design with snap-to directly on the scan within the context of the site and existing conditions. The workflow integrates with ReCap Pro for processing point clouds before import.

• Which formats does Advance Steel export for fabrication? 

Advance Steel generates direct NC files for CNC machines, DXF files for cutting and drilling, and complete fabrication data packages. For interoperability with MIS software, it exports KISS and XML formats. For BIM workflows, it exports IFC 2x3. Shop drawings can be exported in DWG, DXF and PDF formats.

• When should you NOT choose Advance Steel Educational? 

The Educational version is not suitable for paid professional use, commissioned fabrication work or engineering firm operations. In such cases, the Commercial version is required. Advance Steel is also not the right choice for projects focused exclusively on reinforced concrete or timber structures, as it is specialized for structural steel. If you do not already have AutoCAD installed, you will need to purchase an AutoCAD license before using Advance Steel.

• How does Advance Steel compare to Tekla Structures and SDS/2?
