How does the RDS Device CAL work?

An RDS Device CAL is assigned to a specific device and allows that device to connect to a Windows Server 2025 Remote Desktop Services environment to access remote applications, desktops, and network resources. Each device that connects to the RDS server requires its own Device CAL.

What are the advantages of using an RDS Device CAL instead of a User CAL?

An RDS Device CAL is particularly suitable for organizations where several users share the same device, such as shift-based workplaces, reception desks, warehouses, or training rooms. Unlike an RDS User CAL, which is assigned to an individual user, a Device CAL is assigned to the device and can therefore be more cost-effective in shared-device environments.

Can I transfer an RDS Device CAL from one device to another?

RDS Device CALs are normally assigned to a specific device and are not intended to be transferred freely between devices. Reassignment may be permitted when the original device is permanently replaced, retired, or affected by hardware failure, subject to the applicable Microsoft licensing terms.

Download Windows Server 2025 RDS Device CAL: the code is sent directly to your email

Windows Server 2025 RDS Device CAL does not require a software package to be downloaded onto the client device: when you purchase it from Mr Key Shop, you will receive a valid licence code via email, accompanied by user documentation. The Device CAL is an access licence linked to the physical device, not to the user, and covers all RDS sessions launched from that device, regardless of how many users utilise it. It is the ideal solution for shared workstations, production terminals, kiosks and environments where several people take turns using the same hardware in a Windows Server 2025 environment.

Installing Windows Server 2025 RDS Device CAL: centralised configuration

Device CALs are managed exclusively on the server, via Remote Desktop Services Licence Management in Server Manager. Before proceeding, check that the RDS licence server is enabled and that the licensing mode is set to Per device. Log in to the management console, select ‘Add Licences’ and follow the wizard, entering the code you received, the licence programme and Windows Server 2025 as the reference operating system. No action is required on client devices: the entire configuration remains centralised within the server infrastructure.

Windows Server 2025 RDS Device CAL activation: automatic assignment to the device

Once the licence pool has been loaded, the RDS server automatically assigns a Device CAL to the device upon the first valid remote connection. The assignment remains active for a minimum period of 52–89 days before the licence can be released and returned to the pool. This mechanism ensures stability in the management of fixed workstations and predictable coverage for every device registered within the infrastructure. The code received from Mr Key Shop can be redeemed immediately via the wizard: no additional steps, no delay in getting up and running.
